About me…
Crafting Enduring Garden Furniture in North Devon
From my workshop in a converted North Devon barn, I create robust garden furniture built to withstand the elements and enhance your outdoor space. Each piece is handcrafted with care, drawing on traditional techniques and years of experience.
My work is shaped by life on our small farm, where managing woodland and pasture has given me a deep appreciation for durable, practical design. This understanding of the outdoors influences every piece – from the construction methods to the timeless styles that suit any garden setting.
I focus on creating furniture that combines lasting quality with genuine craftsmanship. Each piece is built not just to endure, but to become a valued part of your garden for years to come.
Working between the workshop and the land provides a natural rhythm that keeps the creative process grounded in practicality and purpose.
Timber
Built for the British Climate
Every piece of furniture we create is crafted from carefully selected C24 structural-grade timber, chosen specifically for its superior strength and reliability. This high-grade timber contains fewer knots and has a more consistent density than standard wood, making it the perfect choice for furniture that needs to stand the test of time.
We use pressure-treated timber exclusively in our workshop. This isn't just a surface treatment - it's a deep preservation process where protective compounds are forced deep into the wood's structure under high pressure. This creates a natural shield against:
Rot and decay
Fungal attack
Wood-boring insects
Weather damage
The result? Furniture that's ready to live outdoors year-round in the British climate, with an expected lifespan of 15-30 years.
Quality in Every Detail
Our commitment to quality extends to every aspect of construction. We use professional-grade zinc-plated & yellow-passivated fixings that won't rust or stain your furniture, ensuring that every joint remains secure through years of use.
Cut ends are treated with a clear preservative even if you don’t select a stain.
What to Expect as Your Furniture Ages
Because wood is a living material, it will naturally evolve over time:
Colour Evolution: Our clear wood preserver protects against rot and water ingress while leaving the natural grain fully visible. Over the first 6 to 12 months, exposure to natural sunlight will cause the timber to weather gracefully into a classic silver-grey patina.
Natural Cracks & Checks: As the wood expands and contracts with changing weather, small surface cracks (checking) may appear, particularly in hot sun. This is a completely normal characteristic of solid timber. Thanks to our deep pressure treatment and preserver application, these surface marks will not affect the structural integrity or durability of your piece.
Seasonal Movement: You may notice minor shifting in the timber as humidity changes throughout the year. This natural breathing process is expected in quality wooden garden furniture.
Built to Last
In a world of disposable furniture, we're proud to craft pieces that will serve your garden for decades. Our timber choice reflects our belief that garden furniture should be an investment, not a seasonal purchase.
Additional Protection
All of our garden furniture is crafted from high-quality, pressure-treated timber, providing robust built-in protection against decay and wood rot.
To ensure maximum longevity and immediate weather resistance, every piece comes hand-finished with a clear wood preserver as standard.
Barrettine Wood Preserver (Clear)
We apply Barrettine Wood Preserver to every item before it leaves the workshop. This high-grade treatment provides an essential extra layer of defence while keeping the natural character of the timber on display.
Natural Aesthetic: Enhances the natural wood grain with a subtle, clear matt/satin finish that allows the timber to age gracefully into a natural patina.
Active Biocidal Protection: Unlike basic off-the-shelf fence treatments that merely coat the surface, our preserver contains active fungicides that penetrate deep into the timber to actively kill rot spores and protect against wood-boring insects.
Deep-Penetrating Solvent Formula: We use a professional-grade formula that soaks directly into the wood fibres rather than sitting on top, ensuring the protection stays within the timber where it is needed most.
No Flaking, Peeling, or Blistering: Because true preservers do not form a plastic-like film on the surface, the finish will never crack, blister, or peel away over time as the timber naturally moves.
Biochemical Defence: Standard DIY treatments rely entirely on keeping water out with a thin surface layer. Our preserver works at a cellular level, ensuring the wood remains biologically protected against decay even if the outer surface is scuffed or scratched.
Effortless Long-Term Maintenance: When it comes time to refresh the finish in a few years, there is no tedious sanding or scraping of old, flaking paint required—simply apply a fresh coat directly over the clean timber.
